Six things you didn’t know about Mama Joy

There are few people that take supporting South African sport as seriously as Mama Joy Chauke.

The former Orlando Pirates superfan isn’t just a lover of soccer but has been spotted at major rugby and cricket matches too.

Here are six things to know about Mama Joy

1 She is in France supporting the Springboks

In case you didn’t know, Mama Joy loves the Springboks and she is currently in France living it up as she tracks their progress.

The superfan will be hoping for a long run from the defending Rugby World Champions.

2 Mama Joy was named as a top superfan by FIFA

In 2022, she was honoured by FIFA for her support of football and in particular Bafana Bafana.

She has been invited to numerous meetings and councils held by FIFA as a sort of fan ambassador.

Chauke attended the Qatar 2022 World Cup as an honoured guest.

4 Mama Joy supported Orlando Pirates for over 30 years

Mama Joy backed Orlando Pirates to the hilt for over 30 years and her presence in the stands was ubiquitous.

That spell recently came to an end after a falling out with top brass.

5 Switched allegiences

The fanatic was given a prominent role around Royal AM and has now switched her support to the relative PSL newcomers.

She said of the swap: “As hard as it is, I am leaving Orlando Pirates. I want to support MaMkhize as a woman in football and I want to support Royal AM.” 

6 Mama Joy is from Limpopo

She may live in Soweto now but Mama Joy grew up in North Eastern Limpopo having been born in Malamulela.

Mama Joy currently lives in Dobsonville, Soweto with her family.
