Alex Murdaugh‘s sole surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, took the stand to testify in his father’s defense on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023 after he was charged with killing his mother, Maggie, and brother Paul in June 2021. It marked the first time he spoke out about the death of his family members, and it was an emotional time. He teared up at several points throughout his testimony as he tried to convince jurors that his father could never hurt someone let alone his own family.
Despite Buster, 26, vouching for his dad, the disbarred South Carolina attorney was found guilty on March 2, 2023 for both murders. He has not spoken out about the verdict as of this writing. Find out everything you need to know about Buster and the six-week-long trial below.
Alex Murdaugh Was Found Guilty For The Double Murder Of His Wife And Son
Alex Murdaugh, 54, reported the murders of his son Paul, 22, and wife Maggie, 52, at their 1,700-acre family estate, known as Moselle, on June 7, 2021. The former lawyer and his wife had been living separately for some time, according to the New York Post, but the pair met to reportedly visit Alex’s sick father. That never happened, as both Maggie and Paul were shot multiple times near dog kennels on the property. Alex was indicted in July 2022 for both murders and pleaded not guilty.
Buster Said He Regularly Spoke To His Family Members Before The Murders
Buster was called on to testify by his father’s defense. During his emotional testimony, Buster said that he kept in touch with all of his family just about every day, according to The New York Times. He described their family as “close-knit,” per Today.
Buster Testified That He Spoke To Both His Mother And Brother Before Their Death
As he testified for his dad, Buster claimed that his father had called him before going to the Moselle home before he allegedly found Maggie and Paul murdered. Buster revealed that his father informed him he was on the way to see his mother, and he called shortly after he allegedly found that both of them were murdered. “He sounded odd, and then he told me that my mom and my brother had been shot,” he said, per People. “I just sat there for a minute. I was in shock.”
After the murders, Buster also testified in dispute to a claim from the prosecution that claimed Alex had said, “I did him so bad,” when referring to his deceased wide and son during a police interview. Buster argued that it was clear that his dad had said, “They,” rather than, “I.”
Buster Claimed His Father Was Shaken By The Murders
Alex testified that after learning about the murders, he immediately drove to be with his dad. When asked about how his father reacted to the murders, Buster explained that Alex was “heartbroken” by Maggie and Paul’s deaths. “I walked in the door and saw him, gave him a hug,” he recalled. “He was destroyed.”
