Cape Town – The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner and legendary former Bafana Bafana player, John Moeti has passed away at the age of 55.
The South African Football Association confirmed his passing after family spokesperson Victor Rakhale informed them that Moeti passed away during the early hours of Monday, February 06.
“It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John “Dungi” Moeti,” Rakhale told SAFA.
Moeti played at both professional and international levels as a midfielder. Moeti played club football for Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United; he also earned 29 caps for the South African national side between 1995 and 1999, scoring one goal.

“John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. He succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6 February 2023) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.
“We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support. The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course,” Rakhale added.
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan conveyed his condolences.
“The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti,” Jordaan said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends.”
