Ryan Garcia (23-0) took to social media on Friday night to announce that he will no longer fight Mercito Gesta and will instead turn his focus to Gervonta Davis (27-0), predicting an early knockout in the highly-anticipated bout.
Garcia, 24, will face Davis, 28, in April 2023, but was reportedly set to have his stay-busy fight in January.
Best Ryan Garcia knockouts
“Been thinking about it during the time they were figuring out this fight and I feel the fans, and everyone who supports boxing, have seen these tune ups already,” Garcia tweeted. “It’s time that we give the fans what they want. Also, he requested the tune up, not me, so let him handle business. LET’S GO.
“F–k the tune up. Bring on Tank. SPARKING HIM OUT IN 2.”
While nothing was ever set in stone for the Garcia-Gesta fight, the boxers had reportedly already signed contracts for the event, according to Mike Coppinger of ESPN.
Gervonta Davis will have a ‘tune-up’ fight
Davis, meanwhile, will have a tune-up fight against Hector Luis Garcia on January 7, 2023.
Even though Davis is a heavy favorite in his preparation contest, it’ll be devastating to see him lose.
Both Gervonta and Ryan are undefeated, so when they face each other, one of them will go home with his first career defeat, barring a draw.
“I’ll be back in the ring Jan 7 stay tuned for more details! After that it’s me and Ryan signed sealed delivered…done deal,” Davis tweeted.
