Despite being denied her Government’s support, Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane, has finished second runner-up in the Miss Universe contest.

The 2021 Miss Universe contest was held in Israel.

Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu won this year’s contest held over the weekend.

Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira finished as first runner-up.

It would be recalled that the President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government of South Africa withdrew support for Ms Mswane in the contest, as a form of protest against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

Organizers of Miss Universe had urged that the pageant should not be politicised.

But South African Arts and Culture ministry insisted that “the atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians are well documented” and it could not “in good conscience associate itself with such”.

The Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa noted that Ms Mswane should have withdrawn for the sake of South Africa’s global standing.
