Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse has publicly announced her mayoral committee – and the Democratic Alliance politician has surely taken the concept of a ‘coalition government’ seriously.

Coincidentally, this is the reason behind her delayed announcement, due to the considerably complex entanglement.

“I announced the Mayoral Committee for the Joburg Multiparty Government today. They’re dynamic and they’re ready to take the city forward!! Let’s stand behind them for a better and brighter Johannesburg.”

Balancing act to please all parties in coalition

Despite the complexity of juggling numerous political parties, Phalatse evidently has pulled off the seemingly impossible task. Phalatse explained that parties that failed to secure posts on the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee will be accommodated within the large range of chairperson positions.

The mayor says that the pressure to please all those involved is understandable, she highlighted the importance of working towards a majority coalition government in an attempt to stabilize leadership within the city.

Notable appointments

The Democratic Alliance has secured finance, group corporate and shared services, development planning as well as environment and infrastructure services within the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee.

Interestingly, former Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba’s Action SA bagged posts in transport and economic development, in addition to public safety.

Former police chief David Tembe has earned himself a post as the new MMC for public safety.

While it is interesting to see these appointments, the Freedom Front Plus and even the African Christian Democratic Party have also managed to make the cut onto the Johannesburg Mayoral Committee.
