It’s safe to say 2021 has been a memorable year for PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

Not only did the Tshwane giants wrap up a fourth PSL title during the course of the year, they have got the defence of their title off to an almost insurmountable lead at the halfway mark of the 2021/22 season.

The Brazilians are well on course for what would be a fifth consecutive title and a 12th overall since the PSL era kicked off in the 1996/97 season.

They have 37 points thanks to 11 wins and four draws this campaign.

They are a yawning 14 points ahead of current second-place side Orlando Pirates, although the Soweto side have played one fewer match.

The Brazilians currently hold the record for the highest number of log points won in a calendar year91 – which they achieved in 1999.

With four matches remaining in 2021, Mamelodi Sundowns have picked up 86 points over the course of the last 11 months and 12 days.

That means they ‘only’ need another five points to tie that record – and six to beat it – out of a possible 12 remaining points up for grabs.

We won’t bet against them doing so!
