Festival of lights: Three traditional Indian outfits ideas for Diwali

Nov 2, 2021

In South Africa, Diwali is celebrated on Thursday 4 November this year.

Diwali is known as the festival of lights and is celebrated by Hindu people. In India each region and language group has their own way of celebrating Diwali but the meaning behind the religious festival remains the same.

Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and wisdom over ignorance. This is linked to Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, who was sent into exile for 14 years. His devoted wife Sita and faithful brother, Lakshmana went along with him. However, the demon king of Lanka, Ravana abducted Sita in an attempt to make her fall in love with him. Rama eventually rescued Sita and defeated Ravana, returning back to his home.

Diwali is the celebration of Rama and Sita returning home. The people of Ayodhya celebrated the prince’s homecoming by lighting up their homes with earthen lamps which are known as diyas, burst crackers and decorated the city. Every year Hindus celebrate Lord Rama’s homecoming with the festival of lights.

While this is the second Diwali amid a global pandemic, South Africa is currently under level one of national lockdown. Therefore, Diwali celebrations are likely to take place.

Drawing inspiration from the Indian celebrities, here are three traditional Indian outfits to rock this Diwali.

Possibly the Gen Z and Millennial favourite go-to traditional Indian outfit is the lehenga. Young people are most likely drawn to lehengas because of the several different ways to style the outfit.

You can choose from full glam, simple, floral and more but the most fun comes from the blouses! Student of the Year 2 actress Ananya Panday recently wore a floral lehenga skirt with a full-glam blouse.

While Shanaya Kapoor, who is seen in a few episodes of Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, used a more modern-styled blouse with cutouts on the side.

Many young ladies have started using velvet crop tops or shirts as blouses to style their lehengas as well.

Actress Janhvi Kapoor styled her plain light pink sari with a glitzy blouse which would make the perfect Diwali outfit if you’re going for something simple and elegant.

A salwar suit closely resembles one of the most common Indian traditional outfits in South Africa, a punjabi. However, the difference between the two is in the cut. Actress Sara Ali Khan wore a stunning salwar suit for Diwali last year.
