Meghan Markle recently gave a reading of her children’s book, The Bench, for the Brightly Storytime channel, in order to bring her own story to life.

Meghan Markle’s book reading of The Bench

According to Entertainment Online, the 40-year-old Duchess of Sussex gave a shout-out to her 37-year-old husband, Prince Harry, and their two-year-old son, Archie in the video posted on YouTube.

“I wrote this as a poem for my husband and our son, Archie, and then turned it into a book so you can enjoy it too,” she says.

She also talked about the drawings from illustrator Christian Robinson.

“I asked him to do something special for me and use watercolours, which isn’t the usual medium he works in, but he did it to make this extra special,” she notes. “I hope you love the pictures as much as you love the words.”

Prince Harry and Archie’s bond

The Bench tells the story of the special bond between father and son, which the Duchess wrote for Prince Harry and Archie:

The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” Meghan said in a statement. “That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

Twitter reacts

Prince Harry and Meghan are currently living in California after stepping down as senior members of the royal family in 2020.

While some reviews of Meghan’s book reading has been positive, others called it a “brilliant sales job“. Meghan has also come under fire for introducing herself as a Duchess to children.

In the video, she said: “Hi and welcome to Brightly Storytime. I am Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and today I am going to read you my book called The Bench.”

“And of course she introduces herself as the Duchess of Sussex. She won’t let the title go will she?” said one Twitter user.

Another made the point: “It’s literally their name.”

“They are still very much royals, Harry is still a prince by blood and Meghan a princess and duchess by marriage.
