Party leaders from the ANC, DA and EFF are at the time of publishing being voted for by the South African public, but which of the Soweto giants will they be rooting for in next weekend’s derby?
The first Soweto derby of the new season will see Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates do battle at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 6 November.
Kick-off is at 15:30.
The three major politicians are divided over the sides they will be supporting this weekend.
PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA LEANS TOWARDS CHIEFS
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa is an avid Black Leopards supporter. However, when it comes to choosing a side to support in the Soweto derby, he is leaning towards Amakhosi!
According to the OperaNews website, Ramaphosa was seen celebrating Kaizer Chiefs’ 50th anniversary a couple of seasons ago.
JOHN STEENHUISEN IS NEUTRAL
The Democratic Alliance’s John Steenhuisen is supporting neither side as he is strictly an AmaZulu fan.
He was born in Durban and is a loyal supporter of Benni McCarthy’s Usuthu.
The DA leader will be more focused on AmaZulu’s history-making CAF Champions League campaign after McCarthy’s side qualified for their first-ever CAF Champions League.
EFF DIVIDED OVER SOWETO GIANTS
Julius Malema is a devout Orlando Pirates fan.
However, several of his counterparts are rooting for their rivals – Kaizer Chiefs – meaning there’s a divide in the EFF.
Who will you be supporting when the Soweto giants clash on Saturday?
