In an extract from her memoir, actress Jamie Lynn Spears claimed her parents pressured her into getting an abortion at the age of 16, while her sister singer Britney Spears was in an alleged abusive conservatorship for 13 years. Where was their mom Lynne Spears through all of this?
JAMIE LYNN SPEARS CLAIMS SHE WAS PRESSURED INTO AN ABORTION
In an extract of her memoir, the Zoey 101 star claimed her parents pressured her to get an abortion when she was pregnant with her daughter Maddie. Jamie Lynn and her ex-boyfriend Casey Aldridge welcomed the now 13-year-old Maddie to the world in 2008.
“(They) came to my room trying to convince me that having a baby at this point in my life was a terrible idea,” wrote Jamie in her memoir.
She claimed her parents thought she was too young to have a baby and it would kill her career.
“It will kill your career. You are just too young. You don’t know what you’re doing. There are pills you can take. We can help you take care of this problem … I know a doctor,” she claims they told her.
“Everyone around me just wanted to make this ‘issue’ disappear…everyone was certain that termination would be the best course of action,” she continued.
Jamie Lynn went on to say that after a heated argument with their father Jamie Spears, he suggested she put her baby up for adoption.
BRITNEY SPEARS CONSERVATORSHIP BATTLE
In 2008, Jamie was appointed as Britney’s conservator following the pop star’s mental health concerns. The conservatorship was split into two parts – her estate and finances and her as a person. Jamie Spears was initially in control of both, but stepped aside as her personal conservator in 2019 due to health reasons. Jodi Montgomery, a care professional, replaced him on a temporary basis.
Britney claimed that the conservatorship was “abusive”.
“Ma’am, I’ve worked since I was 17 years old. You have to understand how thin that is for me every morning I get up to know I can’t go somewhere unless I meet people I don’t know every week in an office identical to the one where the therapist was very abusive to me,” said Britney in a 24-minute statement in court in June.
“I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive, and that we can sit here all day and say oh, conservatorships are here to help people. But ma’am, there are a thousand conservatorships that are abusive as well,” she continued.
On 29 September a judge suspended Jamie as Britney’s conservator after 13 years. This is the closest the pop star came to freedom since 2008.
WHERE WAS THEIR MOM, LYNNE SPEARS?
An abortion, conservatorship and more, where was their mom, Lynne Spears?
Lynee and Jamie eloped when she was 21 years old in 1976. However, their marriage was troubled from the start. In divorce papers filed and later withdrawn in 1980, Lynne claimed Jamie cheated on her, on Christmas Day. Jamie also reportedly wrestled with alcoholism.
In 1977, Jamie and Lynee welcomed Bryan Spears, the older brother of Britney and Jamie. Lynne divorced Jamie in 2002. However, Lynee reportedly went with Jamie to file the documents for Britney’s conservatorship in 2008.
LYNNE SHOWS CONCERNS OVER CONSERVATORSHIP
Lynee entered the conservatorship three years ago “because I wanted to ensure that everything in my daughter’s life was handled in the best interests of my daughter, the conservatee, which I did not believe at the time (and I still do not today) to be the case,” according to Vanity Fair.
Lynne began to oppose Britney’s conservatorship earlier this year labelling it “toxic”. However, there is no evidence of what, or how much she has done to assist her daughter.
