UPDATED list of every MTN8 winner after Mamelodi Sundowns’ first ever victory

The 2021 MTN8 final is done and dusted and congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns for adding the trophy to the bulging cabinet.

The title was Masandawana’s first since the telecommunications company took over as headline sponsor in 2008.

Last season’s winners Orlando Pirates have won more MTN8 trophies (3) than any other PSL team since inception.

When MTN came in to sponsor the eight-team competition, Kaizer Chiefs were the first to lay their hands on the trophy.

Golden Arrows then became the second team to win it in 2009, defeating now-defunct Ajax Cape Town 6-0 in the final.

Orlando Pirates then won their first title in 2010 and defended it in 2011 to become the first club to win the trophy back-to-back.

The 2012 edition was won by Moroka Swallows who defied the odds to beat SuperSport United in the final.

Swallows failed to defend the trophy, and in 2013 now-defunct Platinum Stars beat Orlando Pirates to taste glory.

Kaizer Chiefs then took the trophy away from Platinum Stars in 2014 when they defeated rivals Orlando Pirates.

Ajax Cape Town, then under the tutelage of Roger de Sa, won the 2015 MTN8 final.

Another defunct PSL club, Bidvest Wits, won the 2016 MTN8 final, beating Mamelodi Sundowns in Mbombela.

In 2017, Eric Tinker lifted the trophy with then new employers SuperSport United after he had left Cape Town City for the Tshwane outfit.

Cape Town City engraved their name in the history books of the MTN8 competition as they won the trophy in 2018.

SuperSport United won it again in 2019, and this time Kaitano Tembo was the man in charge of the team.

In December 2020, Orlando Pirates made it three MTN8 trophies in 12 years by beating Bloemfontein Celtic in the final.

And in 2021 it was the turn of South Africa’s most dominant side, Mamelodi Sundowns, to finally get their hands on the title – and a cool R8 million winners’ cheque!
