Two suspects from an alleged business robbery syndicate were shot and killed by the police in Benoni, Gauteng on Saturday morning, 30 October. Five suspects were arrested.
TWO DEAD AFTER POLICE SHOOTOUT IN BENONI
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the police’s Crime Intelligence shared information about a gang that was planning to rob a business in Ekhurleni.
“Information was operationalised and a team of law enforcement agencies consisting of the Hawks, SAPS Highway Patrol Unit, Benoni Tactical Response Team, SAPS Air Wing, Gauteng Saturation Unit, Ekurhuleni Trio Task Team and District Operations Team, MDOC CI CIT Team, Tracker Connect, Bad Boyz Security and Vision Tactical Security was established to track down the suspects,” said Masondo.
The law enforcement team intercepted two cars in Brentwood Park, Benoni, at approximately 7:40. The first vehicle, a white Mercedes Benz had four occupants and the second, a silver Polo Vivo, had three.
When the suspects saw the police they started shooting and the fire was returned by the authorities.
Two of the suspects were fatally wounded and the remaining five were cornered and arrested. The police recovered four firearms that belonged to the suspects.
The suspects will appear in court in due course.
