Local hip-hop group Skwatta Kamp has played a massive role in the growth of the genre in South Africa. Their last album was released in 2009, but Skwatta Kamp member Shugasmakx revealed that a new album is ready for SA hip-hop fans to enjoy.
SKWATTA KAMP’S DISCOGRAPHY
Skwatta Kamp, made up of Shugasmakx (Lebogang Mothibile), Flabba (Nkululeko Habedi), Nish (Musawenkosi Molefe), Infa (Sechaba Kgala), Slikour (Siya Metane), Nemza (Sello Mofokeng) Bozza (Nkosana Nkosi) and Relo Makhubo founded their hip-hop group in 1996.
The group’s name Skwatta Kamp is derived from “Squatter Camp” which is another name for informal settlements.
Their debut album Khut En Joyn was released in 2002 and since then they have kept South African audiences entertained with their catchy lyrics and raunchy tunes. Two of their most popular songs are The Clap Song and Umoya. Since 2009 the award-winning group has gone their separate ways.
The group sadly lost Flabba in March 2015 after he was stabbed by his girlfriend Sindisiwe Manqele. Nish passed away in February this year from COVID-19 related complications.
SKWATTA CAMP IS READY TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC
Speaking to Drum, Shugasmakx shared that the group has a new album planned. He mentioned that they are working on a few things to make sure the release is amazing.
“We had released two singles a while back, but they did not do as well as we had hoped. So, we went back to the drawing board to see what we had to do to deliver a dope comeback album and I think we have done it. Obviously, the game has changed so we had to work on a few things.”
“What we do has the ripple effect on the people we work with because they benefit too, so we are trying to change the economy one project at a time,” added the Soweto-born rapper.
SHUGShASMAKX ON ACTING
Shugasmakx is not only known for his incredible rapping skills, the multitalented star shared that he started his television career when he was eight years old. “From eight to 14 I was acting and did a couple of ads.”
The 38-year-old has appeared on television several times and was also a celebrity contestant on the fifth season of the dance competition show,Strictly Come Dancing. He was also the co-host of My Perfect Proposal in 2014 alongside Dineo Moeketsi.
His production company Meca, produces the Mzansi Magic show Grootboom & Sons in collaboration with War Child Entertainment. He explained that they had been pitching Grootboom & Sons since 2018. The show follows a Xhosa family with a funeral parlour as a family business.
“It’s nerve-wrecking seeing it on TV because we hope it is well received by the audience. We tried our best but we cannot pay too much attention to social media.”
The series features Sibulele Gcilitshana, Zandile Msutshwana, Bongile Mantsai, Mbasa Msongelo and Luzuko Nketho.
