The police in the Free State arrested a 17-year-old learner for allegedly stabbing a 19-year-old learner to death at a school near Harrismith. The fatal stabbing reportedly took place because of a dispute over a cellphone.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said that Harrismith police were alerted to the stabbing incident at Lerato Thando High School in Intabazwe at approximately 14:10 on Thursday, 28 October.

“On arrival at the scene, police members were led to one of the classrooms at the school where the body of a learner was found lying in a pool of blood near the door,” said Makhele.

According to the police report, a Grade 10 learner went to a Grade 11 class where he found a group of boys playing with a cellphone. The Grade 10 learner then allegedly grabbed the cellphone and refused to return it to the Grade 11 group.

“It is alleged that the suspect, 17, took a knife from one of his classmates and allegedly stabbed the deceased, 19, once in the chest. He collapsed and died instantly on the scene,” said the police spokesperson.

The learner was arrested on suspicion of murder. He will be charged accordingly and is expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court imminently under the supervision of his parents.
