Farm attack: Gunmen burst into homestead, shoot three workers

Three farm workers survived a shooting on a farm on the border of South Africa and Lesotho in the district of Van Stadensrus on Tuesday night.

The farm workers were busy preparing their dinner when a gang of unknown armed suspects allegedly burst into their home and opened fire on the men.

SAPS regional spokesperson for the Freestate, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said that the farm workers from the Balmacara Farm, which is located on the border of the two countries, had been admitted to a local hospital and were receiving treatment for their gun shot wounds. 

“It is alleged that during the evening of Thursday; 28 October 2021 at about 19:15 five unknown African males stormed into the homestead at Balmacara farm just three kilometers from the border,” Makhele said.

“They then opened fire on three farm workers who were apparently busy preparing food,” he said.

Makhele said that police officers from the Van Stadensrus Police Station had been called to the scene and on arrival were greeted by the macabre sight of spent cartridges and blood splatter near the door of their home. 

“There was also a faint call for help from inside the house. The members forced entrance into the house and in one of the rooms found the 29-year-old victim lying on the ground with gunshot wound on the hand. An ambulance was immediately called to the scene,” Makhele said.

“The police searched around the farm and two other African males were found at a neighboring homestead with gun shot wounds,” he said.

A case of attempted murder has been opened at the Van Stadensrus Police Station.
