A few Pirates players have brought the club into disrepute of late, and now the management are said to not be happy with the bad publicity the team has been getting.

Key players bringing bud publicity to the Pirates side

Perhaps, what has made the situation even worse for Pirates, is the fact that, it has been their key players that have been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, while the team is not exactly high flying at the moment either, in the DStv Premiership.

The first key member of the Pirates side to hog social media attention was Thembinkosi Lorch. The talented forward has had his injury troubles over the past two seasons, which have robbed him of making a similar impact to the one that earned him the 2018/19 PSL Player of the Season award. The mysterious situation surrounding his recent shoulder injury has not helped matters either.

Social media went into an overdrive with regards to what could’ve possibly led to Lorch’s injury, with speculation rife that it was caused by rather sinister circumstances.

Double controversy in one day

Then in the same week, Pirates were slapped with a hefty double controversy when both Ben Motshwari and Gabadinho Mhango made the news for all the wrong reasons. Motshwari was arrested at the club’s training ground for an alleged GBV case, while Mhango was detained at a night club in the whee hours of Saturday morning for failing to settle a R26 000 bill.

Anonymous club sources even went to the extent of saying Pirates owner Irvin Khoza was on the brink of terminating Mhango’s contract immediately. That may have not happened but, now sources speaking to The Citizen claim it might well happen. But Mhango might not be the only one at risk as the source claims all the players are under the microscope over their commitment to cause and discipline, with action set to take place possibly as soon as the January transfer window.

Source speaks on the situation

“The thing is there have been issues of misconduct and general lack of commitment in the team (Pirates). The technical team have been asked to make reports on some of the players to state if they are needed or committed enough.

“They feel with the quality that the team has, it should not be struggling against lower opponents like Marumo Gallants and should be challenging (Mamelodi) Sundowns and others for trophies,” said the source.

Lorch, Gaba and Motshwari in danger?

With that being said the obvious names that come to mind are those of Lorch, Motshwari and Mhango, and what makes the more ominous for the trio is that their contracts are due to come to an end at Pirates at the end of the season.

With all three being such key players for Pirates it would be a tricky and controversial move to terminate their contracts, especially knowing that rival clubs would love to have their services. But, it could, in turn serve as a sign that nobody is bigger than the club with Khoza sending a clear message and setting an example using the trio.
