SA vs WI: 16 runs off 35 balls – Is this the worst T20 innings EVER?

Oct 26, 2021

What was all that about? Lendl Simmons has put on a bizarre display at the T20 World Cup, with some branding his performance for the West Indies against South Africa as ‘one of the worst innings ever’.

Lendl Simmons accused of hitting ‘worst innings ever’

The group stage game, already mired in controversy following Quinton de Kock’s decision NOT to take the knee and subsequently getting dropped, played out in two parallel realities, as quick runs at one end were tempered by the slow and steady approach enacted by Lendl Simmons – who finished with a meagre strike rate of 45.71.

At first, there seemed to be a method in his madness. Sometimes, a player digging in and scoring at a slower rate can be beneficial for the team: An opener can always ‘anchor’ the side, and pick up quick runs later in the innings.

But this just never happened for Lendl Simmons. What’s even stranger is that he didn’t hit a boundary during his 61-minute stay at the crease, and all his runs came from singles – so he hit no twos, threes, fours, OR sixes.

The problem did not appear to be with the pitch, as Evin Lewis belted a quickfire 56 and Kieron Pollard added some swift runs towards the end of the West Indies innings – and they eventually managed to set South Africa 144 runs to win.

Lendl Simmons innings ‘breaks records’ – for all the wrong reasons

What’s more, Simmons ended up putting his name in the record books – multiple times. Amongst the booby prizes, he has now faced the joint-highest amount of balls in a T20 World Cup innings without hitting a boundary, and his paltry knock is the second-slowest one recorded in the international format of the game…

Most balls faced in a T20 World Cup innings without any boundary (4/6):

35 – Lendl Simmons v SA, 2021
35 – Matthew Cross v OMAN, 2021
35 – Alok Kapali v SA, 2007
34 – Gary Wilson v WI, 2010#WIvSA.
