The police in the Free State are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a multi-vehicle accident on the N5 Bridge over the Nuwejaar River claimed the lives of two people. The accident may be related to the ongoing trucker protest in the province.
POLICE INVESTIGATING FATAL TRUCK ACCIDENT
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the accident took place after a truck driver, who was transporting coal, was forced off the road by two suspects who left then left the coal truck on the N5 bridge “to block the traffic flow.”
Makehele said another truck, which was transporting maize, collided with the truck that was already blocking the road. The maize truck hit a bus – from the Maluti Bus Services – and a minibus taxi that was making a u-turn to avoid the accident.
“In the process, the truck carrying maize veered off the road and landed on the shoulder of the road where the driver sustained serious injuries,” said the police spokesperson.
A woman passenger in the bus sustained minor injuries and two passengers in the taxi died upon impact, according to the police.
“A case of culpable homicide is being investigated. The names of those who died can only be made known after the next of kin has been informed,” said Makhele.
