Two people, a security guard and a civilian were injured after they were shot during the robbery of a jewellery store at Menlyn Park shopping centre in Pretoria on Sunday, 24 October 2021.
The mall confirmed the incident in a brief statement issued just several hours after.
“It has been reported that a security guard and civilian have been shot and have subsequently been taken away by an ambulance for further medical attention,” the shopping centre said in a statement.
Emergency medical service Emer-G-Med which responded to the robbery confirmed that one patient was shot multiple times and airlifted to hospital, while another was transported via ambulance for treatment.
Some Menlyn Mall patrons reportedly hid inside some of the stores, including a Woolworths outlet. Police managed to soon intervene and took control of the mall. Menlyn Mall says its third entrance was closed, while the rest of the shopping centre was declared open for trade.
Menlyn Mall shooting: Investigation still ongoing
For now, all Menlyn Mall can say is that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is still investigating the robbery and no arrests have been made yet. The South African has reached out for comment on the case, but calls rang unanswered.
A clip has been doing the rounds on social media, showing how the robbers managed to bypass spikes at the mall’s parking exit.
