T20 World Cup: South Africa struggle to modest total against Australia

South Africa posted a modest 118 for 9 in their 20 overs having been put in to put in their T20 World Cup opener against Australia.

The Proteas were hampered by a procession of wickets with top order batsmen guilty of falling cheaply.

Temba Bavuma played past a straight one from Glenn Maxwell ensuring that the Proteas didn’t get going in the powerplay.

Rassie van der Dussen didn’t last long before he tamely pushed at a length ball outside off to give Josh Hazlewood his first scalp.

Quinton de Kock was then back in the hut as he tried to force the pace and got out playing on in comical fashion.

Aiden Markram’s well-played 40 ensured that the Proteas built something of an innings but he didn’t get much in the way of assistance as he saw a procession of partners return to the hut cheaply.

Heinrich Klaasen was another top order man undone prodding at one outside off and the tame manner of these dismissals must be a grave concern for team management.

Markram’s fall late on slowed the Proteas down to a crawl until some late lusty blows from Kagiso Rabada, including a final over six lifted the Proteas to 118, a total that will take some defending.
