Orlando Pirates have already begun talks with long-term Kaizer Chiefs target, Thabo Nodada, according to the latest reports.

Nodada has long been thought to be a top transfer target for Chiefs, but it is now arch-rivals Pirates who seem to be pushing for his signature.

Nodada a Cape Town City stalwart

Nodada has been one of the long-serving members of the Cape Town City outfit. The 26 year-old is one of the founding members of the club, having moved across to Cape Town when Black Aces’ PSL status was bought by the club. Therefore it is no surprise that he holds a leadership role at the club. Such leadership qualities might be exactly what Pirates feel they need from him.

Known to be a Chiefs target until recently

Strangely enough, although often linked and thought of as a dream target for Chiefs, Nodada was not rumoured nor linked to a move to Amakhosi during the close season. Before the transfer window, reports emerged linking the Ixopo-born player with a sensational reunion with former Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy at Amazulu.

With Amazulu having qualified for the CAF Champions League, that suggestion suddenly didn’t seem that far fetched at all. However, nothing came off those links, and it would then be Pirates who would be linked with a move for Nodada’s services towards the end of the window. However, nothing would materialise from those rumours either with the box-to-box midfielder staying put.

Pirates now seem to be in the driving seat

Now, however, if news reported by The Citizen are anything to go buy, both Pirates and Cape Town City are already in dialogue with the Soweto giants looking to put one over Chiefs by wrapping up the signing of Nodada.

A source told The Citizen why Pirates are after Nodada’s signature

Source confirms Buccs interest.

“The (Pirates) technical team raised concerns that they cannot use a variety of systems in the team because they have the same kind of players. The management has then gone out to try and get different players on the technical team’s recommendations and Thabo Nodada is one of those they have set their eyes on.” Said the source.

The source didn’t stop there, however and confirmed, that Pirates and Cape Town City are already  at the negotiation table, with the Buccaneers already having a strategy to make the deal worthwhile for the Citizens.

“The talks have already started I think and there could be some swap deals done to sweeten it for City,” concluded the source.

Chiefs previous attempt to sign him

The South African News can confirm that Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung had approached Cape Town City owner John Comitis for the services of Nodada in 2017. Comitis then consulted then coach McCarthy about the deal, before McCarthy flatly refused to even entertain the idea, expectedly.

Nodada has only recently signed a new kong-term contract at Cape Town City until 2024 which could’ve deterred Chiefs from pursuing him in the previous window. Amakhosi went on to add free agents Phathutshedzo Nange and Cole Alexander instead. Pirates, although also already reinforcing their midfield with Goodman Mosele and Ntsako Makhubela, seem undeterred by the players new deal.

Will Pirates finally get their man in January? Watch the space!
